Dawn of History | 2023

Client: GMCC (The al-Sabah Collection)

Location: Kuwait - DAI - Americani Cultural Centre.

Scope: Interior Renovation, Exhibition Design

The exhibition's design explores the collaboration between Kuwait University and Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah. The display showcase occupies a central position in the space, allowing free-flowing circulation around it. The showcase in a museum setting is a portal, a time machine that has the ability to flatten time and bend geographies to tell a story. The displayed artifacts are in dialogue, moving beyond their literal meaning into a realm of exploration and investigation.

The glass windows of the showcase are projected onto the walls, introducing a secondary set of portals that transpose the viewer into the institutional environments that support the creation of this exhibition. One portal showcases the lecture hall, a space for academic and theoretical exploration, while the other represents the conservation lab, a space for practice that aids in the physical investigation of artifacts. The two spaces typically exist detached from one another, but they have managed to meet through the collaboration between the two institutions. The projections echo back onto the showcase, creating the table, an essential piece of furniture in both environments that facilitates dialogue and exchange. The table extends the showcase beyond its typical relationship to the viewer, inviting them into a space of contemplation.

The map appears as a supporting character, articulating the geographies of the civilizations and contextualizing them into their contemporary context. Borders and boundaries overlap, creating a complex patchwork of human exchange and emphasizing the legacy and heritage of the artifacts on display.
